The Squares
Mendoza is one of the most beautiful cities in Argentina and it is advanced in the urbanization of arid areas, being internationally considered as an expression of an oasis atmosphere. The city has squares and parks carefully cared and ordered streets, each one with its own style. In a permmanent struggle for the caring of nature, it has developed and kept a number of green spaces contributing to raise the quality of life.
SIMMETRIC SQUARES
Independencia Square: This is an enormous green space of four blocks, it was projected as the center of the new city after the earthquake of 1861. Surrounding it and in an equidistant way, four squares complete the matriz.: San Martín, Chile, Italia and España.
From this enormous garden in the center, two important urban axis are originated: Peatonal Sarmiento, that joins with the comercial area and the General San Martín Park and Avenida Mitre that leads to the Cívic Center. Its multiple species of trees and plants are identified with its respective scientific names and the normally used. Weekends are scenario of the artisan fair that every now and then are enriched with the presence of some shows. Bellow the central stage, a great saloon shelters the small Municipal Julio Quintanilla theater and the Municipal Modern Art museum with painting exibitions and contemporary sculptures.
San Martín square: In the center of the banking area, between the 9 de Julio, Gutierrez, España and Necochea streets, this beautiful square has in its center a raised statue of the Libertador that signals with his right arm the way his army marched in the Los Andes Chain of mountains.
Chile Square: Located in the residential area , it is limited by Necochea, 25 de Mayo, Gutiérrez and Perú streets. In the central space there is a monument in memory of O'Higgins and San Martín. Also its ancient vegetation of tipas and eucalyptus and a spectacular aguariba, the most ancient of the city .Chile square with its abundant trees and playgrounds for children invites to relax.
Italia Square: Entering by the corner of Montevideo and 25 de Mayo, you access the Italia square exhibiting different art pieces, among them the most distinguished are one by Luis Perlotti and the “Loba y los pueros”, sculpture adopted by the romans as symbol of their city , accompanied by allegoric motifs as the one that symbolizes the foundation of Rome (the wolf and Rómulo and Remo) the statues and murals with italian motifs.
España Square: A few steps from the Independencia square and at one block from Avenida San Martín, it posseses a design composed of a central space with a typical fountain of the spanish patios and in the back, a monument representing the brotherhood of the argentinians and the spanish with comemmoration murals, España square is one of the most admired places for the tourists and mendocinos. The tiles and shinning floor, the central fountain , the monument and the trees will surely seduce you to relax here for a long time.
