Mendoza City

Mendoza is the capital of Mendoza Province and is one of the major cities in western Argentina. It is an important city because it is irrigated by several rivers such as the River Mendoza Tunuyán and also because it is strategically located at the foot of the Andes which is the principal road to Santiago de Chile and the Pacific. Mendoza produces most of the wine and much of the fruit of Argentina.

Mendoza was destroyed by a violent earthquake in 1861. There were thousands of people who were hurt either physically or socially. Most of the population fled to nearby areas. Due to this earthquake most of the colonial architecture disappeared and very few evidence is left. To the south-west of this devastated city, the new Mendoza was rebuilt. This city was based on the european city.

There is a central park called ""Plaza Independencia" (Independence Park). Surrounding it there are four more parks. Starting from the north-east and going clockwise the parks are called as follows: Plaza San Martín, Plaza España, Plaza Italia and Plaza Chile.

Mendoza is "ciudad oasis" (oasis city). It is one of the most beautiful cities of Argentina. It is known worldwide as a urban city which has an oasis-like environment.

As a tourist there are several places to visit. Mendoza offers a variety of things. The five parks at the center of the city are very beautiful an is worth to have a walking tour around these parks. Not only offers gardens but also statues and monuments in the parks. People could also go along the Av. San Martín, Sarmiento, and Av. Las Heras where you can find stores in which you can buy regional pieces of craftsmanship. Mendoza is also known as the starting point for sports in the mountains well as rafting.
